About
Us
Textile, one of humankind oldest commercial
ventures, continues to find new applications in modern world. Textiles are
not simply carpets, draperies and apparel but are also artificial kidneys,
arteries, and hearts. They are incorporated in the shuttle space suit, in
carbon fibre composite rocket exhausts, and in nose cones for NASA.
Textiles compose artificial turfs and fabric roofs in sports stadiums and
are reinforcement or barrier liners under roads, landfills, and sewage
treatment ponds. Engineered fibrous structures have many varied uses in
our everyday life and are playing critical role in novel complex systems
in the fields of space, medicine, safety, environmental control,
transportation and construction. The economic scope and importance of
technical textiles extends far beyond the textile industry itself and has
an impact upon just about every sphere of human economic and social
activity.
Textile engineering encompasses the synthesis
of polymers by nature and humans, fibre fabrication processes, assembling
of fibres into one, two and three dimensional structures, modification of
structural properties through dyeing, finishing, coating and measurement
of complex aesthetic and mechanical properties of fiber based systems. New
polymers and fibres, new methods of assembling fibres into useful products
and new applications of fibres are continually developing.
Department of Textile Technology is a unique
department among eighteen National Institute of Technology, which
provide textile education in India. The department offers a broad based
undergraduate programme on Textile Technology, post graduate programme
(M.Tech) in Textile engineering and Management, M.Tech by research, post
graduate diploma in Garment Manufactuing Technology ( starting from Aug'
2006) & Pd. D programme. The course curriculum is comprehensive and
aims to provide a sound background in all areas of textile. As a result of
the hard work of the faculty members over a decade the department has
risen to a position of national eminence.
Courses offered by the department are
concerned with the basic studies of processes and machines for converting
fibers into yarns and finished fabrics. It also deals with the physical,
chemical and technological aspects of natural and man made fibres. All
aspects of textile production viz. spinning. weaving, knitting, processing
and testing are extensively dealt with. Recently courses on Garment
Technology and Technical Textiles have been introduced. The department has
also initiated research and development activities in the above
feilds.
Vision
To built a rich intellectual potential
embedded with inter-disciplinary knowledge, human values and professional
ethics among the youth, aspirant of becoming engineers and technologists,
so that they contribute to the society and create a niche for a successful
career.
Mission To provide
quality textile education To produce a tailor made engineer as per the
requirement of textile industry To establish as a premier department in
undergraduate and post graduate teaching and research To provide
continuing and informal education programme relevant to textile
industries To undertake research project on a globally competitive
basis |
